Essential Information For Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka’s currency is the Sri Lankan Rupee (LKR, Rs) and it is not readily available outside of Sri Lanka. If it is available, the exchange rate is usually very poor so it is best to wait until you arrive in Sri Lanka to get local currency.

Cash

Sri Lanka has a network of ATMs (cash points) around the country, so for ease of use and security, it may be best to use ATMs when on the island to draw out cash. We strongly advise that you get in contact with your bank before departure to inform them of your travel plans, otherwise you may have problems accessing your account when on the island. Please be aware that your own bank as well as the bank where you withdraw cash in Sri Lanka may both charge a transaction fee.

Small notes are very useful for buying items locally and tips so think about getting smaller denominations (Rs10, 20 and 50 notes) from banks or moneychangers. Sterling Pound (GBP, £) is the best currency to carry since it attracts the best exchange rate in Sri Lanka (however Scottish or Northern Irish bank notes are not accepted).

Travellers’ Cheques

Travellers’ cheques are NOT accepted in Sri Lanka.

Credit Cards

Most hotels and shopping outlets in Sri Lanka accept credit cards (VISA and MasterCard are best), although smaller, locally run hotels and guesthouses do not usually offer this facility. Please take care when using your credit cards in Sri Lanka, as we have had reports of misuse by vendors and cloning of cards.

“Excellent. Your choices [of accommodation] for us were superb. We loved every one for different reasons.”
