Tangalle
Sun, Sea and Sand
Tangalle
(or Tangalla) - pronounced "Tun-gaa-le" or
"Ten-gol" - is an attractive fishing port on the south coast of Sri Lanka
with a palm-fringed bay and extensive paddy fields to
the north. It also has one of the best beaches in the
southern coastal belt, and even though there are a growing
number of small hotels and guest houses, the beach remains
mostly deserted with good sand and safe swimming when
the sea is not rough.
To the south of the town, the coast becomes a succession
of little bays, with Goyambokka being one of the best.
To the north, the fine sandy beaches of Medaketiya and
Medilla, where you can hunt for shells, stretch for
several kilometres along the Rekawa lagoon. However,
even when the sea looks calm along this long, spectacular
sweep of beach, the rip current can be deceptively strong
and so weaker swimmers should take particular care when
bathing.
What to See and Do
Rekawa is one of the places where turtles come to lay eggs
and, since 1996, has been protected by the Turtle Conservation
Project. Click on Rekawa Turtle Sanctuary for more details.
A visit to Rekawa Turtle Sanctuary can be best enjoyed
via a 2-hour tour from Tangalle.
