TikaWeeks #49/2025: Sri Lanka update
Posted by John on 6th December 2025
Here is the latest official communique from Buddhika Hewawasam, Chairman of Sri Lanka Tourism (04 December 2025):
"The Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA) wishes to inform all foreign tour operators, international travel partners, and visitors that tourism facilities, services, and major visitor attractions across Sri Lanka remain fully operational following the passage of Cyclone Ditwah.
The recent State of Emergency declared by the Government of Sri Lanka is purely an administrative mechanism that enables the President to rapidly mobilize troops, rescue teams, engineering units, and essential resources for disaster response. The measure is not security-related, and there are absolutely no restrictions or concerns regarding visitor movement anywhere in the country.
Comprehensive assessments conducted jointly with regional authorities and tourism stakeholders confirm that key tourism zones, hotels, transport networks, heritage sites, beaches, wildlife parks, and cultural attractions are now open and fully operational and welcome visitors. The country’s main infrastructure – including airports, highways, and communication systems – continues to function smoothly. Alternate routes have been activated to ensure smooth connectivity, including those replacing the temporarily affected Kandy–Nuwara Eliya road.
Visitors already in Sri Lanka are continuing their itineraries as planned, and new arrivals can expect regular, uninterrupted travel experiences. The SLTDA is working closely with Destination Travel Companies (DMCs), Hotels and all other stakeholders in the tourism industry, to ensure the safety and wellbeing of all visitors to the Island.
We warmly invite all tourists to explore the island’s beauty, culture, cuisine, and nature with confidence."
