TikaWeeks #14/2026: Sri Lanka update

Middle East Conflict – The Sri Lanka Perspective
The first two months of 2026 were signalling a bumper year for Sri Lanka, both in tourism and across the economy in general. However, by the end of February, all best laid plans were disrupted, bringing unprecedented challenges to the aviation and travel industry. Sri Lanka relies heavily on Middle Eastern carriers to bring in the majority of Western visitors. Consequently, the sudden suspension of these services created a significant setback. This resulted in a reduction of approximately 18% in arrivals compared with the same period last year, driven by cancellations and a slowdown in new bookings.
However, the impact has been mitigated to a great extent. SriLankan Airlines continues to operate its European routes using modified flight paths, while Turkish Airlines has increased its frequencies. Additionally, British Airways has announced the resumption of its flights from October 2026.
As global events continue to unfold, many travellers are taking a more considered approach to where and how they journey. What we are seeing is not a pause in travel, but a shift towards journeys that are more intentional, more personal and more thoughtfully designed. Travel today is no longer about how much you can see, but how deeply you can experience. In a world that feels increasingly fast moving, the greatest luxury is often space. Space to pause, to connect and to feel present within a place.
Travel in Sri Lanka is increasingly evolving into an experience to be felt and savoured, rather than simply a tour or a beach escape. The island is uniquely equipped to meet these expectations through its immersive journeys, spiritual experiences, wildlife and wellness offerings.
While recent developments in the Middle East have understandably raised questions, Sri Lanka remains entirely unaffected, offering a sense of calm, continuity and quiet reassurance. Sri Lanka has secured its fuel and gas supplies and is fully prepared to welcome travellers from around the world.
2025 – A Bumper Year for Sri Lanka Tourism
Sri Lanka recorded its highest ever tourism figures of 2,362,521 in 2025, surpassing the previous record set in 2018, making last year’s performance a clear signal of strong and sustained growth and reaffirms renewed global confidence in the island as a must-visit destination. Despite recent challenges, including weather-related disruptions, Sri Lanka’s tourism sector has shown remarkable resilience, which has continued into 2026, with January achieving the highest-ever number of tourist arrivals for the month of January, with 277,327 visitors.
British Airways – London Gatwick to Colombo direct, non-stop
Good news. British Airways is relaunching a direct, non-stop service to Sri Lanka, three times per week, from 23 October 2026. Flights will depart from London Gatwick on Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 17.30 and arrive in Colombo the following day at 09.00. The return schedule commences on 24 October 2026 with flights departing Colombo on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday at 11.00 and arriving in London Gatwick at 17.00 on the same day. The route will be serviced by a Boeing 777 for the winter season only.

Perched upon the historic grounds of the Sutherland Estate, Uga Ghiri is a sanctuary where the mist of the Ella cloud forests meets refined modern grace. Across 4 hectares of lush, terraced hillsides, the resort breathes new life into a meticulously restored colonial manor, which now serves as the property’s soulful main house. Here, soaring ceilings and period architecture create an atmospheric backdrop for guests to pause and absorb the extraordinary beauty of Sri Lanka’s central highlands. However, the heart of the guest experience lies in the fifteen standalone villas, each designed as a private haven of contemporary elegance. Spanning 120 sqm, these sanctuaries offer generous space for unhurried living, featuring expansive windows that frame dramatic panoramas of emerald tea plantations and the iconic Nine Arch Bridge. For a touch of true indulgence, every villa includes its own intimate, heated 2-metre jacuzzi on an outdoor deck, allowing guests to surrender to the serene mountain breeze in complete privacy. Uga Ghiri is scheduled to open in June 2026.
