Sri Lanka is a lush, tropical island paradise, known to Arab traders as Serendib - hence "serendipity", meaning discovery by happy accident - and famously described by Marco Polo as "undoubtedly the finest island of its size in the world".
Culturally rich and environmentally diverse, Sri Lanka boasts eight World Heritage Sites (the oldest dating back to the 3rd Century BCE), 86 species of mammals (including elephants and leopards), more than 500 bird species (including 33 endemics), a colourful array of flowering plants and trees, a Hill Country famous for tea and trekking, 14 National Parks out of 100 areas protected by the government, and 1600 km of Indian Ocean coastline offering palm-fringed and sun-drenched tropical beaches.

At the end of a busy year for Tikalanka, we welcome Mahesh, Pathi and Suba’s son, back into the fold after 10 years in Australia as an intrinsic part of our Sri Lanka operation. Further afield, Dihini, their daughter, is completing a tourism management degree in Canada as she continues to develop her invaluable skills to the benefit of Tikalanka. The future is bright, and we are looking forward to another successful year ahead. Wishing you an enjoyable festive season and a positive 2026.

Sri Lanka continues to recover well from the effects of Cyclone Ditwah. The Kandy to Nuwara Eliya road has reopened, although it is restricted to a single lane at Ramboda as the major landslide is cleared. There is now road access between Nuwara Eliya and Ella, and the Hill Country railway line from Ambewela near Nuwara Eliya to the southern terminus at Badulla is open again. The main Colombo to Kandy road (A1) is open but there is some traffic near Kadugannawa as only one lane is open. We are keeping a close eye on developments with daily updates from our ground control fleet and accommodation network across the island.

According to local reports, Sri Lanka seems to be recovering well from the effects of Cyclone Ditwah. Ninety-five percent of the national power supply has been successfully restored, fuel supplies are being maintained, main roads are open (with a couple of exceptions), and all sites in the Cultural Triangle are open as are the principal national parks. The majority of the coastline was not affected too severely by the cyclone. Most stages of the Pekoe Trail have been reopened. However, the Hill Country railway line from Ambepussa to Badulla is suspended until further notice.
