Bundala National Park
Bundala National Park, just west of
Yala West NP, is a special bird habitat housing
149 species, including the only resident flamingo population
in the south. More accessible than Yala West NP in
a 4-hour jeep safari, the park is home to a great deal
of wildlife, including elephants and crocodiles.
This bird sanctuary is to be found
among salt lagoons, which are also a haven for aquatic
animals. Between November and March, when the monsoon
blows from the northeast, the indigenous population
of wader birds is increased by the arrival of migratory
birds. This is the best time of year to visit the reserve.
Towards late afternoon, the crocodiles begin to hunt
and the elephants come to drink on the shores of the
lagoons.
Most of the best wildlife
areas in Bundala NP can be visited in a 4-hour jeep safari from
Tissamaharama (Tissa).
