Unawatuna
Sun, Sea and Sand
Sri Lanka's tranquil south begins east of Galle's generous
harbour bay. The roads get rougher, the towns smaller,
and the bays, surrounded by rocks, quieter and more
isolated.
Unawatuna, a small beach resort just a few kilometres out of Galle,
is the first attractive bay in the south and, like the
rest of the southern beaches, remains off the usual
tourist route - for the time being, at least. It is
a marvellous place to stay providing you choose to stay
up the hill, in the village of Yaddehimulla, and head
for the sea in the deserted inlets of Jungle Beach.
The coral reef of Bona Vista will delight divers and
snorkelling enthusiasts alike, or if you prefer, you
can sail out to more distant reefs in a traditional
kattamaran.
What to See and Do
Galle is the most
important town in the south and has retained
much of its colonial atmosphere. It is also home to
the Old Dutch Fort, which is now a World Heritage Site.
Most of the principal sites of interest can be visited
in a 2-hour tour from Unawatuna.
