Asian Tsunami Update
Our thoughts are with all those affected by the disastrous events that
took place on 26 December 2004.
All but a few of the hotels damaged by the tsunami are now repaired and
fully operational. The south and southwest coasts of the island have recovered well since the tsunami,
and Tikalanka Tours will be monitoring coastal areas to establish when the infrastructure
has recovered sufficiently to allow the return of tourists to our favourite beaches
without adversely affecting local communities.

Sri
Lanka has some of the finest palm-fringed tropical beaches
in the world. It is surrounded by the Indian Ocean which
laps the sun-baked golden sands with its clear blue
water that is a constant 27°C all year round. Sri
Lanka can also offer the visitor award-winning luxury
accommodation at the beach, ensuring an ideal location
for anyone who is seeking nothing more than sand, sea,
palm trees and tranquillity.
Tikalanka Tours has chosen the best beach locations
away from the overcrowded tourist resorts of Negombo,
Mount Lavinia and Hikkaduwa. In addition to describing
the actual beaches themselves, this section also details
things to do and see within easy reach of these specially-selected
seaside areas.
The island's superb beaches lie along its magical coastline
to the south and southwest, with sandy coves and estuaries,
and long palm-fringed stretches. Beaches vary in character
and facilities so you have a wide choice. There are
the upmarket resorts on the southwest coast around Bentota,
which offer watersports in a sheltered lagoon. Further
south are the picturesque and quieter beaches at Mirissa,
Tangalle and Unawatuna. By contrast, Nilaveli, near
Trincomalee, offers clear waters and white sandy beaches
on the quieter and less developed east coast.
